You might be putting it like this

Most people don't arrive with a diagnosis, just a feeling that something isn't right. These are some of the concerns we help with most often.

  • I'm getting up three or four times a night to pass water.

Night-time urination is common and often treatable once we know the cause.

  • My GP said my PSA is raised and I don't know what that means.

A raised PSA has many possible causes. We explain yours and what, if anything, to do next.

  • I noticed blood in my urine and it frightened me.

It should always be checked. We arrange the right tests promptly and talk you through them.

  • I'm worried about my prostate and would rather know.

A consultation gives you facts in place of worry, and a plan you can follow.

  • My bladder feels like it's running my day.

Urgency, frequency and leaks can be assessed carefully and managed in practical ways.

  • Not sure your concern fits any of these? That's completely fine. Book an initial consultation and tell us in your own words.

If you suddenly can't pass urine, have severe pain, or feel unwell with a high temperature, please don't wait for an appointment: call NHS 111 or go to your nearest A&E.

Consultations

Every appointment is with a Santis consultant, from your first conversation through to follow-up.

Initial consultation

30 minutes

A 30-minute meeting with a Santis consultant to talk through your symptoms, look at any test results you already have and discuss your treatment options. If a SelectMDX urine test is likely to help, it can be arranged as part of this first appointment.

Follow-up consultation

In person

A chance to review your progress, go through new results and adjust your plan. If you've had a biopsy or surgery, this is where your consultant explains the histology (tissue) results with you, face to face.

Telephone follow-up

From home

When you don't need to be examined, your consultant can call you to discuss results or check how treatment is going, so you don't have to travel for a short conversation.

Tests, explained simply

Your consultant will only suggest tests that will genuinely help answer your question, and will tell you why each one matters.

Blood tests

A simple blood sample can tell us a lot. The most familiar is the PSA test, which measures a protein made by the prostate. Your consultant may also check things like kidney function, depending on your symptoms.

A PSA result on its own isn't a diagnosis. We look at it alongside your age, history and examination before deciding anything.

SelectMDX urine test

SelectMDX is a urine test that looks for genetic markers linked to prostate cancer. It can help your consultant judge how likely it is that further investigation, such as a biopsy, is needed.

It can be arranged alongside your initial consultation, and your consultant will explain what your result means for you.

What to expect, step by step

Knowing what comes next makes a worrying time easier. Here is how your care usually unfolds.

  1. You book

Choose a time online or by phone. If you're using health insurance, have your policy details to hand.

  2. Your first consultation

Thirty unhurried minutes with your consultant at one of the hospitals where we see patients. You'll talk through what's been happening, and may have a short examination.

  3. Any tests you need

If tests will help, such as blood tests or a SelectMDX urine test, your consultant explains each one and arranges it for you.

  4. Your results, explained

We go through your results with you in plain language, in person or by telephone, and talk honestly about what they mean.

  5. Follow-up and your plan

Together you agree the next step, whether that's reassurance, treatment or keeping an eye on things, with follow-up appointments as you need them.

Common questions

Something else on your mind? We're happy to help.

Ask us a question
Do I need a referral from my GP?

If you're paying for yourself, you can usually book directly. If you're claiming on health insurance, most insurers ask for a GP referral and an authorisation code first, so it's worth checking with them before you book.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

A list of any medicines you take, copies of recent test results or letters, your insurance details if you have them, and a note of the questions you'd like to ask. You're welcome to bring someone with you.

When is a telephone follow-up suitable?

When you don't need an examination, for example to talk through straightforward results or check how a treatment is working. Your consultant will suggest an in-person appointment whenever that's the better choice.

Do you see insured and self-pay patients?

Yes, we see both. If you're insured, check your cover before your appointment. If you're paying for yourself, we'll explain the costs clearly before anything goes ahead.
